I’m eating a piece chocolate fudge layer cake.

Part of me thinks, ‘Hey Lex, it’s okay, you get that cake’, because its a brutal thirty five degrees outside and old man winter is hanging out eating cake, too. But the annoying part of me knows that it is actually April, old man winter is a mean liar, and it is just about swimsuit season.

I linger a bit longer with my fork still lodged in the super center, by far the most moist and tasty part, before letting it fall to the plate slowly with a cinematic clang.

Sure–we all have a few months to get in swimsuit shipshape, but if you haven’t noticed, DC’s best bikini venues have dressing rooms sans mirrors. This obviously means you will have to walk out of your denial bubble and go check yourself out in front of a mirror in front of other people who will check you out. I find this good practice, as it will slowly coax you into being more comfortable in say, a warm beach setting (pretend the sound of this persistent rain and wind is an ocean crashing). Since the amount of suits you will try on is comparable to the number of peas in a hearty serving of peas, by the time you find ‘the one’, you will have conquered the self-preparation needed to unveil it at the beach. Bonus: You will have the confidence to accurately exchange ‘the up-and-the-down’ stare-off with strangers that is required after dark on the Ocean City boardwalk.

And speaking of the OC board “walk”, it’s really high time you pitch that t-shirt beach cover-up illustrating you as a well endowed woman in a hot pink bikini with a bodacious cartoon body. Randomly, my mind houses an infamous Brady Brunch quote: ‘Come on kids, we’re going to Sears!’

Absolutely not, but we are going to go to Cusp, and we are going to bring feather dusters and truly knock the dust off of those to-die-for spring frocks and summer sandals that have been relentlessly teasing the pashmina-donned passerbys through the crystal clear storefront. Cusp is the newest addition to Georgetown, DC’s intimate little shopping hub, and it’s bringing us the most sought after pieces from our favorite designers’ spring ’07 ready-to-wear collections. If you don’t get ready-to-wear them, I will. It’s pretty impossible not to share my overwhelming feeling of garment need when you too see the hypnotizing presentation at Cusp. When I first walked inside, the neutral floor (which is trendily unfinished) fell away and all the fine threads magically hovered and popped their colors and sass like a teenage girl does bubble gum. So, if you have a feather duster handy that is not of the rainbow gradient descent, you can meet me at 3030 M street NW.

I just caught a glimpse of some chocolate fudge layers in my peripheral, and then quickly pictured a bomb, symbolic of ‘Pieces of April’ starring Katie Holmes. Like that movie, a cake eater in a stellar swimsuit gets bad reviews. Here’s to looking at you, DC kid.
