Washington, DC: A Sport for Everyone
Whether it is the excitement of college buzzer beaters or professional upsets, Washington, DC has a sport for everyone’s taste buds. The city on the Potomac houses football, baseball, basketball, soccer as well as hockey, and women’s basketball.
The Redskins of the National Football League are ready to show that they can contend for a national championship next year. Under the leadership of current Hall of Fame coach Joe Gibbs, the Redskins will be an exciting team to watch come next September.
The Nationals this year are looking to bring a World Series Championship to the District of Columbia. After playing in Montreal up until two seasons ago, they are looking to begin their sophomore year in a new city. Although the Nationals made meager off-season moves, they are on course to bolt right out of the starting gate in April so they do not become left behind by the Mets and Phillies.
The Wizards are currently in their season right now. The Wizard’s playoff chances are very high due to them leading the NBA Southeast conference. The Mystics season is currently over, but look for the lady court ballers next year. Both these teams have a lot of talent and should be great to see if you can get tickets.
DC United has shown that the Nation’s center city is a force to be reckoned with after visiting the playoffs four years in a row. The recent signing of English soccer star David Beckham to Los Angeles bolsters the league’s prominence. If you are in town the same time as the former and latter, go to see a match.
The hockey team who skates at the Verizon Center are known as The Capitals. Over the past seasons, the Capitals have been a sketchy playoff team. Look to see a decent match of hockey if a Canadian team is in town.
The college front of DC sports is made up of three talented and competitive Universities. The American University Eagles bring a talented soccer team to the pitch year after year. The Eagles have produced one professional player in defender Avery John. John played in the 2006 World Cup in Germany for his native country Trinidad and Tobago. John currently plays in the MLS for the New England Revolution.
The George Washington University Colonials haven’t produced as many players as other teams on the East Coast, but one alumnus tops any athlete all together. Former Boston Celtics Coach Red Auerbach, an NBA Hall of Famer from GW won nine NBA titles, winning eight straight.
The Georgetown University Hoyas have produced some highly touted all-stars of the NBA. They first started out with Center Patrick Ewing that set their precedence high for stars to follow. After Ewing, G-Town alumni such as Allen Iverson, Dikembe Mutumbo, and Alonzo Mourning have gone on to bigger and better things in professional basketball.
Whether you are coming to Washington DC for business or pleasure, we have a sport for everyone to come and enjoy. The people at RFK Stadium, FedEx Field, and Verizon Center are waiting for visitors from close or afar.
