What is perhaps least known about the African American Civil War Memorial is that it has an excellent museum and research center. People may know the memorial located on U Street, but rarely do people go to the museum to look at its collection when in fact it offers quite a number of interesting exhibits. For example, there is an original Lincoln-signed facsimile of the Proclamation on display at the museum. The museum may be quite small, but the assortment of relics it holds is outstanding.

The chief curator is also a jewel of a man. He is very helpful, very erudite and is extremely engaging more so when he talks about the pieces on display at the museum. You can tell he has dedicated his life to his study.

This museum really is an interesting place, not just because it’s lesser known, but because of the knowledge that it offers to its visitors. You’ll be surprised at what you would find out about the role the African American troops played in the Civil War. Plus, admission is free. Add to that a very zealous and extremely knowledgeable team of curators and this place has the makings of a great place to go to if you’re interested in learning something new.
