Hillwood Museum and Gardens

Absolutely awe-inspiring, this house is fabulous in all aspects. From the collection it houses, to the house itself, the estate, the garden, the café and even the audio tour, this mansion is exceptionally brilliant. Even though there is an entrance fee, the price is surely worth or maybe even be considered low-priced bearing in mind the experience this place offers.
To appreciate why the mansion is truly exquisite, you need to have a little knowledge about its past owner, Marjorie Merriweather Post. She was a woman with vast resources and really had an eye for beauty. She was the heir to the Postum cereal fortune and was once, at a point, the wealthiest woman in America. The collection she has accrued during her lifetime really reflects her eye for beauty and her desire to leave something behind for mankind when she would be gone. I think this mansion, although she lived in it from when she bought it until she died, was really meant by her to be a museum partly because she hired a curator to take care of the collections in the house and also to facilitate acquisitions of other collectibles.
A word of advise though, if you are planning to go to the estate, kindly phone to ask if there are a lot of people as sometimes they only let a number of people to tour at any given day. It is also somewhat hard to go to so drive there if you can. Otherwise, the place is a real hidden gem in DC and is a highly recommended place to go to.
