Taking a cue from our ‘Lil Triggers’ series, America Hearts’ Jess Matthews finds a marriage this morning between music…and eye wear.

“I got these goggles when I was about 17. I was a snowboard instructor during high school and most winter days I rode down a small Pennsylvania Mountain listening to Appetite for Destruction on my Walkman. I was not supposed to have that Guns n Roses tape, so it was recorded over a Ducktails Cassette.

My friend Susan gave me these sweet yellow shades when we went on a company-sponsored vacation to Mexico. Aside from people on free corporate trips, the all expenses paid resort was filled with honeymooners and older couples who seek out warm locations with free alcohol the way reptiles look for sunny rocks.

The lobby and surrounding pools played musak, including a surprising amount of Guns n Roses songs. A live reggae band played by the pool one day, while someone came around with a monkey you could have your picture taken with. In this picture, I am getting a drink at the pool bar during water aerobics.

When I was touring Europe with Edie Sedgwick, we had a very sweet driver from the Czech Republic named Ales. After the first few days, I asked Ales not to play metal, particularly the Czech blast-beat kind, before noon in the van. He was ok with that and played Czech Hip Hop, Monty Python, Tenacious D, and Hank Williams.

The music was accented by a woman’s voice from the GPS that gave him directions in Czech. By the time we arrived in Prague, we could all tell people to make a left at the next intersection. At the end of tour, Ales said he wanted me to have the sunglasses. When I said I couldn’t take them, he said, ‘C’mon! I’ll get another pair at the gas station in Brno!”

I bought these sunglasses in San Francisco and lost them somewhere in South Africa, which is where I’m driving in this photo. You can’t go more than a few hours without hearing a Michael Jackson song on the radio there. You are just as likely to hear ‘Heal the World’ or ‘Scream’ as anything on Off the Wall or Thriller. Although I was prepared by seeing an African documentary on Michael Jackson on the flight over, I was still surprised to meet dogs named Michael and Jackson in sea-side lodges.

Long thought to be another dormant development, stalled even after Domus Realty presold nearly half of 85 units in 2008, the Ecco Park project in Takoma, at 235 Carroll Street, is now reported to be back on track. Ellisdale Construction, responsible for mixed used developments such as Moderno and Riggs Place, announced earlier this week that they had been awarded the $13 million contract to build the four-story building, containing roughly 80 units, 5-6 thousand s.f. of retail, and 70 below-grade parking spots. The building was designed by Bethesda-based SGA Architects and will include some environmentally friendly features such as a green roof and recycled materials, but is unlikely to receive a LEED certification. Even without the rating, architect Sassan Gharai confidently described Ecco Park as “the building equivalent of a hybrid car.” Financiers are hopeful that it sells better than a hybrid car.

No tenants for the retail space have been selected, and the development team is still undecided on whether the building will be built and marketed as entirely rented units or for-sale units. Dan Ford at Ellisdale said a mix of rentals and for-sale condos is technically possible but not exactly the most attractive option from a marketing standpoint; however, their team has accounted for each scenario in their budgeting strategies. Patios or balconies are planned for a majority of units; and a combination of brick veneer, metal and glass paneling, and stucco siding will make up the palette of materials used in creating the exterior fenestration. The building will be a wood frame structure secured over podium slab. Ellisdale President Kevin Ash explained, “We’re really excited about this project; it really is what we do best. With the economics of construction what they are today, wood-frame buildings really hit the sweet spot between density and cost. We’re finding this building type to be the most able to be financed right now.” Dan Ford insisted that the wood frame technique has been perfected by their construction engineers to mitigate common problems such as fire safety and noise transference, enabling them to build safely to code and keeping their budget soundly slim.

A popular technique on the West coast for some time, podium slabs are now becoming a more common occurrence on East coast construction sites. An efficient design solution for 3 and 4-story residential projects with covered parking below grade, like Ecco Park, this special type of foundation system effectively distributes the weight-load from the wood-frame above the slab to walls and pillars below. This technique is not only cost effective, but also environmentally responsible, reducing concrete usage. The cement industry is considered to be one of two principle producers of CO2, accounting for as much as 5% of worldwide emissions.

The site, adjacent to the Takoma Metro, formerly home to a truck rental facility, and a gas station before that, needed loads of contaminated soil displaced and the excavation of several rusted-out oil drums before it was properly suited for construction. That preliminary work was done over two years ago, and the dirt there has had plenty of time to sit idly by, pondering its future. But ground is expected to finally be broken this fall (somewhere between October and January). Constructions is anticipated to span approximately fifteenth months, meaning a delivery date cannot be expected until at least early 2012.

I was sitting on the people mover at San Francisco airport and happen to overhear two business guys talking. The one guy was talking about how he had been pulling out of the gas station on the way to the airport and the Red Light Camera flashed in his back mirror. He admitted that he had run the red light and that he had not really paid attention to the light, since he was in a hurry to the airport.

His buddy started to get pissed off since he realized that the rental car he had was in his name and he figured he was going to get the ticket and would have to come back to San Francisco to go to court. The driver guy smirked and said that he probably would be the one that got into trouble since his face was in the camera, though he earlier had said that the camera took a shot of the back of the car.

Anyway, they went on to talk about how they could get out of this ticket. The one guy came up with this brilliant idea that they could say the rental car they had was already returned much earlier in the day and it must have been someone else that had rented the car. They also suggested they should go to Hertz and see if they could get a post dated receipt that showed they had returned the car many hours earlier.

They worked many schemes, including one idea that the car had been stolen and that they had no idea who might have been driving it. The best idea I heard was they had been dropped off by the rental car company at the airport ‘We Pick You Up’, and that it was one of the rental car employees that must have been driving through the red-light.

I found it amusing, but it does make you realize that most people will do anything they can to get out of paying a ticket or paying taxes. It seems that many people would rather pay a lot more money or go way out of their way rather than just pay the fines or taxes that they owe. I think this mentality is a major problem and groups like the Tea Party are dangerous.
I am sure at the end of the day these guys will just pay the fine, they actually seemed like pretty smart business guys, but it was interesting to hear their ideas and all the crazy concepts they were working through.

It actually does make you understand why judges and police officers don’t trust anyone.
